LAB Oost is een initiatief in Nijmegen en Arnhem voor een nieuwe generatie podiumkunstenaars die werk maken voor een publiek van 4 tot 18 jaar. LAB Oost werd in 2024 opgericht, sindsdien vonden er drie Labs plaats. Ook in 2026 zijn er twee residentieplekken beschikbaar: drie werkweken waarin je experimenteert, onderzoek doet en je werk test voor een jong publiek. De residentie wordt afgesloten met presentaties in Theater Het Badhuis, Theater a/d Rijn en Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen (op locatie).
Wat is LAB Oost?
LAB Oost is een ontwikkelplek voor jeugdpodiumkunsten. We willen experiment en vernieuwing aanjagen in de podiumkunsten voor jong publiek. Dat doen we door opkomende makers uit te dagen om relevante verhalen en nieuwe vormen te onderzoeken en ontwikkelen voor een jong publiek van nu. We bieden expertise en begeleiding op artistiek en organisatorisch gebied, en creëren een context waarin uitwisseling en feedback met jong publiek en vakgenoten centraal staan.
Voor wie?
Wij zijn op zoek naar afgestudeerde en autodidacte makers uit alle podiumkunst disciplines. Voorop staat dat je geïnspireerd bent door de vragen en onderwerpen die leven bij jong publiek. Jouw voorstel voor de residentie laat een uitgesproken urgentie zien. Je kaart prikkelende of schurende onderwerpen aan, of je kijkt met nieuwe ogen naar aloude thema’s. We moedigen (vorm)experiment aan. Ook vragen we je om een concrete theatrale vertaling te verwerken in je concept. Wat gaan bezoekers van jouw werk zien of beleven?
Hoe werkt het?
- Meld je aan via het formulier, de inschrijfperiode is van 3 februari t/m 5 maart. Daar vind je de vragen die we graag willen weten over jou, jouw idee, de doelgroep en hoe je het wil aanpakken. Aanmelden kan via een video of in geschreven tekst.
- Voor 15 maart selecteren we uit de aanmeldingen ca. 5 makers die op maandag 23 maart komen pitchen in Theater Het Badhuis Nijmegen (vergoeding beschikbaar). Dit is een eerste kennismaking waarin jij jouw idee presenteert aan een commissie van de drie partners. De vorm is vrij: in max. 10 minuten speel je een korte performance, lees je een of twee scènes van een nieuwe tekst, of neem je ons op een andere manier mee in je verbeelding. Daarna hebben we een gesprek. Op basis van pitch en gesprek kiezen we een maker.
- In 2026 zijn er twee residentieperiodes: 8 t/m 26 juni en 9 t/m 27 november, beide in Het Badhuis. Er wordt volgens CAO betaald en er is ruimte voor een artistiek team van ca. 4 personen. Bij aanmelding is het van belang dat je beide periodes beschikbaar bent, zodat we niet beperkt worden in de verdeling van de Labs over de twee makers in 2026.
- De presentaties in Het Badhuis zijn aansluitend op de Lab-periode; resp. op 26 juni en 27 november. In Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen (op locatie) en Theater a/d Rijn Arnhem worden beide Labs op dezelfde dag gepresenteerd in een double bill (januari 2027, data nog te plannen). Voorafgaand aan deze presentaties vinden 1-2 repetitiedagen plaats.
Samenwerking
LAB Oost is een samenwerking tussen Theatergroep De Horde uit Nijmegen, Theater a/d Rijn (aangesloten bij De Nieuwe Oost) in Arnhem en Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen en Concertgebouw De Vereeniging. Met LAB Oost versterken we talentontwikkeling in de jeugdpodiumkunsten door gezamenlijk actuele ontwikkelingen, innovatieve ideeën en talent te ondersteunen.

OPEN CALL – LAB Oost #3
LAB Oost is an initiative in Nijmegen and Arnhem for a new generation of performing artists who create work for an audience from 4 to 18 years old. LAB Oost was founded in 2024 and has hosted three Labs since then. Two residency positions are also available in 2026: three working weeks in which you experiment, conduct research and test your work for a young audience. The residency will be concluded with presentations in Theater Het Badhuis, Theater a/d Rijn and Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen (on location).
What is LAB Oost?
LAB Oost is a development place for youth performing arts. We want to encourage experimentation and innovation in the performing arts for young audiences. We want to challenge emerging makers to research and develop relevant stories and new forms for today’s young audience. We offer expertise and guidance in artistic and organizational areas and create a context in which exchange and feedback with young audiences and colleagues are central.
For whom?
We are looking for graduated and self-taught makers from all performing arts disciplines. The most important thing is that you are inspired by the questions and topics that concern young audiences. Your proposal for the residency shows an outspoken urgency. You tackle stimulating or abrasive topics, or you look at age-old themes with new eyes. We encourage (form) experimentation. We also ask you to incorporate a concrete theatrical translation into your concept. What will visitors see or experience when they see your work?
How does it work?
- Register via the form, the registration period is from February 3rd till March 5th. There you will find the things we would like to know about you, your idea, your target group and how you want to approach it. You can register via a video or in written text.
- Before March 15, we will select 5 makers from the registrations who will come and pitch on Monday, March 23 in Theatre Het Badhuis Nijmegen (compensation available). This is a first introduction in which you present your idea to a committee of the three partners. The form is free: in a maximum of 10 minutes you play a short performance, read one or two scenes of a new text, or take us into your imagination in some other way. Then we have a conversation.
- We choose a maker based on pitch and conversation. In 2026 there are two residency periods: June 8 to 26 and November 9 to 27, both in Het Badhuis. Payment is in accordance with the collective labor agreement and there is room for an artistic team of approximately 4 people. When registering, it is important that you are available for both periods, so that we are not limited in distributing the Labs between the two makers in 2026.
- The presentations in Het Badhuis are following on the Lab period (on June 26 and November 27 respectively). In Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen (on location) and Theater a/d Rijn Arnhem both Labs are presented on the same day in a double bill (January 2027, dates still to be planned). Prior to these presentations there will be 1-2 rehearsal days.

LAB Oost is a collaboration between Theatergroep De Horde from Nijmegen, production house / development institution Theater a/d Rijn | De Nieuwe Oost in Arnhem and Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen en Concertgebouw De Vereeniging. With LAB Oost we strengthen talent development in the youth performing arts by jointly supporting current developments, innovative ideas and talent.

You can apply for LAB Oost through the button down below from February 3rd until March 5th. We’ll select the makers before March 15th. Selected makers can pitch on March 23rd at Theater Het Badhuis.
