Vanaf deze week werkt onze maker Merel Severs in Theater a/d Rijn aan haar nieuwe voorstelling Try Not To Know What You Know.
In deze voorstelling brengt Merel, samen met Milou van Duijnhoven, een ode aan een nieuwe, zoekende en falende vorm van heldendom in een indrukwekkende fysieke theaterperformance.
Inspiratie voorstelling
De volgende quote gebruikt Merel als startpunt voor haar residentie deze komende zes weken:
The heroic narrative that we grew up with gives us a narrative to follow, teaches us which roles we are supposed to play in life. It is directive because it is repetitive telling the same story of this white male figure who is saving the world. It sets the structure or the base of how we’re supposed to behave, how we’re supposed to look and move through life. To become fully inclusive in society -there is a lot of diversity work and a lot of conversation but the way the world is structured is white imperialist, colonialist patriarchy-. We’ve been fed with this as the sole and most valid perspective on life. Based on keeping the power with those who have built a world for themselves to stay in power.
We need to change the narrative. Repeatedly tell other stories from a variety of perspectives.’

Over Merel Severs
Theatermaker en performer Merel Severs (1991) studeerde in 2013 af als actrice aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht. Ze werkte met verschillende artiesten en gezelschappen waaronder Khadija El Kharraz Alami, Mart van Berckel en Sander Breure & Witte van Hulst. Sinds 2021 is Severs een van de makers bij het productiehuis van Theater a/d Rijn, aangesloten bij De Nieuwe Oost.
